Hi everyone!

After spending hours and days reading bunch of interesting posts and advices on BYC, I finally decided it was time to join!

I'm new to chickens and just started incubating 6 eggs 2 days ago in a RCOM 10 Pro.
Three of them are blue orpingtons and the other three are silkies. And 10 other silkie eggs are on their way (I'll explain "the story" below...).

The idea of raising chickens emerged 5 months ago when I bought my first house (yay) that already had a chicken coop in the garden. I've had many different pets in my life but never had chickens, so it's a first!

The story? My mistake and impatience, kind of.
After being 200% sure I wanted to raise chickens, I thought it would be a great experience to start from eggs. Got the incubator last week and the same day, looked for fertilized eggs - we've been in lockdown for over a month in France, so it was nearly impossible to find eggs at less that 1km around - so I ended up ordering 10 eggs online. They've been sent out on April 22nd, and I still didn't receive them - because of the lockdown it can take 2 to 10 days to receive letters/packages - looks like I didn't get lucky! While I was desperately waiting for my eggs, on April 24, a man close to were I live finally answered me - that's how I got the 6 first eggs.
I have no idea if the 10 eggs still being shipped are gonna make it or not. Also, my incubator can hold 10 eggs but not 16, so it's gonna be super challenging (risky?) for a first time!
Story to be continued...!

Actually I think that's how I stumbled upon BYC, just Googling "how long eggs can wait until incubation" or "how to incubate eggs at different times" etc! All the posts I read were super instructive, so I'm sure BYC will be a precious help for this first incubation and let's hope first hatching!

Thanks for reading! 🐥

Hello from Quebec.
Congrats on deciding to raise chickens. It is a big learning time and you will encounter all kinds of situations and get help here in this group from all kinds of great and wonderful people. I became a member when I started doing rescues and since I have learned so much. As for the eggs you ordered, not sure they will be any good. It is always best to use freshly laid fertile eggs to put in the incubator. I have found that if I try to hatch eggs that are older than 7 days, most do not develop. After about 10 days you need to candle the eggs to make sure they are developing. Throw out any that are not. Turn them gently a few times each day if you don't have an automatic turner and make sure to keep a level of humidity or the chicks will not be able to break through the hard dry shell.
All in all, it is a great experience but you really need to try and get the freshest eggs possible to have the best results. Good luck to you and let us know how things turn out.

Thanks for the welcoming! 🥰

@DuckyGaze - Thanks for the advice! As for the 10 eggs, they'll be 7 days old tomorrow but I'm aware that their shipping conditions might not be ideal (movements/temperature/humidity/etc), but I still have a little hope. I'll be super careful not to destabilize the first 6 eggs though.

@DobieLover - Well, that's a good question. My thought about this is when they arrive, I'll candle them to make sure they're not cracked first. I have room for 4 more eggs, maybe a few more because the silkie eggs are quite small (at least the 3 that I currently have). I guess if I stagger them, I'll have to manually turn them but my main concern really is when/if the 6 first eggs hatch - the humidity will be too high for the 10 last eggs, I'm not sure if they can handle it for a few days before the humidity gets back to 40%...
