Hi Everyone,

I am just learning about chickens. I do not have a flock (or even just one) yet because I still need to build my coop. I haven’t even picked out one breed I want either. I live off grid in the Rockies of Colorado at 9,300’ so I need to make sure they are a cold hardy breed, I would like them to lay in the winter too since we have such long winters. There are so many breeds to choose from so I’m having a hard time deciding! 😉
So many questions, so little time.
I’m looking forward to learning more from each of you too.

Hello, Kyla, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
First year pullets will lay through the winter. Hens take a break from laying during and after molting.
There are many good laying cold hardy breeds to choose from.
Good luck on planning your flock and building your coop and run!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad you decided to join our community! I am up at 7,000 ft in NM and have found most breeds do fine at this altitude and cold winters. Orpingtons (Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, other Orps) are some great layers, cold and health hardly and lay well into their 6th yr. This article may help you sort out your decision... https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...s a chicken farmer noobie, area that I live in

Stop by our Learning Center as well for some good reads on all the aspects of keeping chickens... https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

Ask as many questions as needed. Welcome aboard!
