(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I bought my first chickens last July, during the pandemic. I had been talking about getting chickens for about a year before buying them.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 11 birds total.
(3) What breeds do you have?
4 ISA Browns (laying), 1 silver laced Wyandotte, 1 Buff orpington, 1 Barred Rock, 1 sapphire gem, 1 easter egger and 1 black astrolorpe..all pullets. I have 1 sapphire gem cockrel(lady at RK accidentally put him in my box) and a pair of guinea. I had 10 cornish crosses in the fall, as a trial to see if we would raise our own meatbirds in larger quantity in the spring.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard cchickens? the ISA Browns are like my pets, that was the first batch I got. I enjoy their personalities, the self sufficiency and just working outside with them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I dont have time for alot of other hobbies, but I do try to have a small garden, can or put up as much food as possible, and spending time with family.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm a mom to 3 great kids, all grown but not all out of the house yet! I'm a RN and manage an ICU. I have a cat and a dog.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
After getting my chickens, one was attacked by a hawk when free ranging. It took me awhile to nurse her back to health, while doing so I searched the internet for information and this site seemed to always be in my search results. She survived by the way but it took about 6 weeks before she learned to be a "chicken" again! I would have culled her had I not read similar stories from the members here, she is now giving me an egg per day...even in winter and is a sweetheart!
