Hello from southern Kentucky. This is my first post, though I've been lurking for over two years now. Google always sends me here whenever I ask a bird question, and there have been many! This forum is actually a great resource for first time "farm bird" people. I started this bird journey with a trip into TSC. SURPRISE! It was "chick days". I totally fell in love with the ducklings. I resisted the impulse buying of the babies, but immediately started researching different breeds and such. I ended up ordering my birds from two different hatcheries, I wanted specific breeds. I decided to finally join, because my Cayuga girl Opal went broody and has been sitting on a clutch for 28 days. One is hatching under her as I type this, so I thought I'd be ready to ask questions that may not have been answered.

Question time:
(1) Are you new to birds / when did you first get birds?
I've had my flock for two years on June 1, 2022. I was very much new to bird keeping. I never liked birds before, I always thought they were better "over there far away from me". I've been randomly attacked by geese, chickens and hummingbirds. Though, the only ones that caused real damage to my person were the geese. There were cheese crackers and a HUGE flock of big white geese, and I was 10 years old.

(2) How many birds do you have right now?
2 geese, 9 ducks and 6 chickens.

(3) What breeds do you have?
American Buff female geese.
Ducks:
Welsh Harlequin drake and 3 hens.
White and black Ancona Drake and 2 hens.
Cayuga hens x 2
Chickens:
Black Jersey Giant hens x 4
Golden Lace Wyandottes x2

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard birds?
I love the way they interact with each other and with my husband and myself. Plus, the eggs are out of this world with their dark orange yolk. I feed a special blend of herbs with the feed mix,as well as them being
"pasture raised".

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We kayak every Saturday, weather permitting. We bring our two smaller dogs with us.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We love on almost 3 acres in southern KY, almost rural but not quite. We have four dogs, the two boys are 65 lbs, and the two girls are 14 and 15 lbs. I have a cat who thinks he's a dog, but is terrified of the outside. I have MS, so I have to be careful during the summer. I have a pretty severe heat intolerance. Thankfully hubby likes taking care of the birds. I'm just there to feed treats and spray the ducks and geese down with the water hose.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found BYC through Google. Just about every question I've had, related to my birds, has been answered by this group. Figured I'd go ahead and join so I can ask questions about my hatching ducklings and post pictures of my mixed breeds...if they hatch.
