My name is Luisa and I live in Marblehead, MA with my family. This summer I'm hoping to get up and running with a coop and some chickens, something I've been looking forward to for some time. I need all the help I can get, from what type of coop to get to what type of chickens will weather this New England winter. Thank you!

Congratulations on doing your research first -- not all of us do (guilty myself) and regret it later!

This is a great community of generous and knowledgeable folks who will do their best to help you succeed.

Some hatcheries send out free catalogs -- regardless of whether you actually order their chicks -- that will give you information about cold (or heat) hardiness, along with other qualities. You can use those as a starting point and corroborate the information with BYC info, just to make sure the hatcheries are correct about conditions where you live. One bonus: the catalogs are full of lovely pictures of beautiful chickens.

Welcome! I’m from a similar climate. I recommend a breed with a small comb and wattles or else you’ll most likely have issues with frostbite, no matter how well ventilated your coop is. Chanteclers, buckeyes, ameraucanas or Easter eggers are all good choices but there are plenty more that I’m sure you’ll discover. Best of luck.
