Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Broodiness is driven by hormones so there isn't a whole lot you can do to encourage her, however Silkies tend to be a broody breed. Broodies do like darkened boxes and places that offer quiet space. You might add some dark curtains to your nest boxes to help entice her.

Hello! I have 9 hens (1 silky, 5 golden comets, 3 azures) and a rooster (silky). I had one question... My silky hen just started laying, and I was wondering when she will go broody/what I can do to encourage her to?
Welcome to BYC! :frow

Some will go broody every 3rd egg they lay regardless of whether the eggs are collected daily or not. Some will brood imaginary eggs and sit on air while others may not go broody ever.. yes even Silkies! Use fake eggs.. and keep any you wanna "set" on the counter.. no longer than a week.

The best encouragement in my experience is proper nutrition, appropriate space for flock dynamics, and shelter from predators.

It's not *ideal* to incubate first eggs.. as the reproductive system comes on line and works out its kinks. Broodiness is hormonally driven and not actually a choice.

Using a flock raiser (or starter/grower) with oyster shell on the side rather than "layer" feed.. highly recommended. Everyone in a mixed age/gender flock gets what they need that way.

Happy adventures! :wee
