I use wood chips that I get for free from the local highway departments. You can also rake up or go collect recently put out bags of dry leaves.

That’s a great idea! I have put tree branches in before.

Any suggestions on other material?

I’ve used wood mulch for a few years but am about to switch to construction sand and see how that does. In the past I have also used straw and wood shavings, but find that wood mulch has worked best though it does need replacing every few months.
