Also a newbie here. Welcome to BYC. We have had chickens for awhile now. It may help convince your dad if you remind him that you will have fresh eggs once your chickens start laying.

They are so much better than store bought eggs.

Depending on where you live it might help to put in your speech that they like to eat bugs too!

If might also help if you stress the fact that hens don't crow and won't be waking him up.
