My name is Janet and I'd like to say hello to everyone! This is my first post on this forum. This is a really wonderful site, lots of great info and helpful folks!

Monday evening, my husband was on his way home from work. He was driving on the freeway, and suddenly out of the corner of his eye, he saw some sort of animal cowering against the concrete wall dividing the freeway. He pulled off (we are animal lovers, we have several rescued rabbits) and ran over to it. It was a chicken! He picked it up, and it immediately relaxed in his arms, eyes closed. He took her back to the car and drove home, cradling her in one arm. We hastily dragged a small animal cage out of storage, i dumped in some aspen shavings, and gave her water. Her beak looked bruised at the tip (possibly from pecking cement?) and her feet were someone beat up and scratched and her feather were very scruffy. My husband went and got her some food at the mill, and she ate..and settled down. She spent the night in our spare bedroom.

Yesterday morning she was very alert after resting all night, and moving around. She looked much better. So I spread newspaper all over the garage and put out her food and water (I scattered some over the floor as well, and she seems to love pecking all around in it.) My husband let her have a good walk around our backyard (not fenced, and I live in a residential neighborhood) and last night she roosted on top of big plastic storage crate.

We have decided to keep her, and named her Sally. :)

I asked on the BYC facebook page yesterday if anyone could identify her from a photo. A couple of folks said she was a 'Buff Orpington'. One gentleman said she looked like a "Rhode Island Red". She is extremely calm and sweet.

My husband is buying the stuff to make her an outdoor enclosure today, after reviewing several plans online. And we are going to begin hunting for a companion for her.

So begins my adventure with keeping chickens!
Looking forward to meeting all of you!

That hen is double lucky. Firstly she didn't get killed on the freeway and then she got picked up by your DH and she's joined a good, loving family.

I LOVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!!! We've rescued countless dogs, cats, etc...but never a chicken! I'm sure she will repay you with much fun, love and lots of eggs. Definitely get her a companion. They need company. Again, Good luck and we're so glad you joined.

My husband just called. He checked with our Town Hall at lunch, apparently backyard chickens are not allowed in our township (There are actually people in my neighborhood with chickens in their backyards, so they must have just not asked.) I cannot believe that he found this little miracle trapped on the highway, and brought her home, only to find out we'll have to find her another home. We are already so attached to her!

I don't even know where to start.
