I'm new to the forums and thanks for the welcome from everyone! I live in south central New Mexico, hot and dry weather and am having my second go at chickens. My first "flock" were rejects from my brother-in-law next door, they were too old for him and stopped laying so they became my pets. I let them free range and live out their old lady years in the yard. They loved to roost on my husband's motorcycle, which didn't make him love them like I did. Anyway, the last one was murdered by a wolf hybrid from down the street a few years ago and I've waited until now to start raising chickens again.
This time, they aren't allowed to free range wherever they want, they are confined to a large area that gives them room to play and keeps them off of the motorcycles. I bought them from an FFA kid that won grand champion rooster at the fair. I bought 7 from him: 1 rooster (he says marans but I doubt it), the hens are 2 RI reds, 1 barred rock, 2 golden comets and an unknown (possibly marans/silkie mix). They are almost coming to me when called and always come when I throw out "goodies" for them to eat. The rooster crowed for the first time this morning, joining in a calling session with the two roosters down the street. I'm hoping for eggs soon, they were all about 4 months old when I bought them 3 weeks ago, so I'm thinking maybe in the next 2 weeks.
Anyway, nice to meet everyone and I'm really enjoying reading the forum and learning about everyone's flocks.
