Sometimes a chick will pip (break the small hole in the egg shell) and then start to zipping really soon, but most of them pip and then don't do anything we can see for quite a while, often six hours or better, and I have had them go more than a day and be fine. Once they start zipping, that is chipping a circle around the shell so they can get out, that can go pretty fast.
