My name is Jeff and I first remember raising chickens as a kid . We had maybe a couple dozen hens at the time so we learned how to feed and water as well as collecting eggs and Rooster control!
My most recent experience was chicken sitting on our new to us 9.5 acres in the country. Our friends were having their old barn tore down and a new one built. So for eight months we sat for 34 hens and one young rooster! Finally in April we ordered our first batch of young chicks. We were able to keep six of the hens we cared for and the rooster ended up, well, in the freezer. (He was too aggressive to everyone)
Our new flock include:
5 Ameraucanas
5 Barred Rocks
5 Buff Orpingtons
5 Golden Laced Wyandotte
5 Silver Laced Wyandotte
6 Columbian Rocks (we ordered 5 but she was the extra!)
Also 1 American Pekin Duck and four Royal Palm turkeys.
We also traded one of the older hens for a younger roo with a friend who lives in a small village that wouldn't have appreciated his morning crowing! So all tolled now we have five mature hens, 31 pullets, and a teenage rooster!
I found backyardchickens.com while researching breeds to purchase. All we ever had growing up were Rhode Island Reds, Buffs and Cockerels.
Our family enjoys watching old movies, hanging out by the bonfire at the pond, and enjoying country living (we missed it!) If it involves being outdoors we like it!
My wife Cindy and I are both teachers, she teaches elementary 1st grade, and I teach middle school computers. We have been married 30 years and have three children- 26 married- 21 and 17.
