Hi, this is our 2nd time around; 1st time was many years ago. Have some 4 day- 7 day or so chicks - 14 of them! One chick is going around and pecking the fuzz around the other chick's feather on their wings, like trying to pull it off. What's that about? Thanx!

Hello!
400

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to joined the BYC family. Not to sure about the chick, maybe curious. Are they all the same color and breed? The chick might see them as different and is trying to get the color off.

It's difficult to know what goes on in the mind of a chicken. Since chickens don't have hands they test everything with their beak to learn if it's edible or not, and so on. Giving them something else to explore can help get their minds off of each other. A small colored ball - they can push around might do the trick. Also a branch makes something to investigate or perch on too.

As they near 3 weeks of age they will begin jostling each other to determine who is alpha and who are the underlings.- this establishes Pecking Order.

Welcome to BYC!

@drumstick diva makes a good point with the brooder toys...chickens do get bored and need something to occupy themselves (other than picking on each other).

When we got our last batch of chicks (a year ago already), we added a couple things for them to "play" with in the brooder. We used cord to hang an old CD down to about head-high, once the chicks discovered that, they enjoyed pecking at the reflection. We also had a short left-over piece of corrugated tubing about 4-5" in diameter that we put in their brooder and they would chase each other through the tubing. One little girl adopted that tube as her favorite sleeping place.

I hope you're having fun with your birds, they can be so entertaining.

Nice to have you join us and if you have questions, feel free to ask!

congrats on your new flock.

You have already been given advice from drumstick diva and NorthFlChick on adding entertainment to prevent boredom. I had a thermometer that was pecking safe in the brooder and they spent hours investigating it. When they get a little older you can hang one of those "baby cake" chick forage cakes and they will love it.

But do keep an eye on the fuzz pecker, if it gets aggressive, separate with a see but no touch divider for time outs. Many members have reported this will help resolve the issue.
