Timing is important to me I have ducks coming in May and turkeys in June or July--- sooo I have prep work to do since I have never had ducks or turkeys before... Secondly Iowa is a neighbor state for me. They shipped them Friday and I got them Saturday around noon. I am thinking the blizzard probably messed up the USPSespecially with long distance deliveries and perhaps that's where the problem lies. I have never had a problem with McMurray.

I would definitely wait to get a replacement shipment. The weather may not be so bad where you are, but the chicks have to travel through some cold places before they get to you. Others may get chicks from the same hatchery and theirs are doing fine, but they didn't have to travel the same route as yours did on their way to your house.
I'm sorry you lost some.

There's a reason hens tend to go broody in the springtime. Spring is the right time for chicks.

I placed my order again today. I only have 4 surviving now so they said they would replace my entire order. I asked them about heating pads and they only give them if you request them, so of course I did. My next step is to go back to the post office and see what the exact stops that my babies make along the way and try to see if I might be able to get them a day early at a sooner stop. Fingers crossed all of these babies will be ok. We shall see Monday!

IMHO, I think they spent too long in transit, coupled with the cooler weather. Bantams are a lot more fragile than standards for the most part. Whenever I receive babies, the first thing I have on hand is sugar water (I have used Sprite and /or Mountain Dew in the past). Don't wait til you get home to dip their beaks. I open the carton at the Post Office, check them there and start dipping beaks right away. 3 times each. Yes, it takes a while, but the drive home gives the sugar water time to work. I mix about 3-4 tablespoons per quart of warm water and shake it regularly on the ride to the Post Office. I have also found that if you dampen their starter ration with sugar water and let them pick at that, maybe even making it a little soupy and dip their beaks in it it helps too.
It's heart breaking to open a box of sick/dead chicks. Murray McMurray is good for replacing them. Have them send them out the beginning of the week, so they won't have to sit somewhere over the weekend.
Good luck! Sounds like a beautiful assortment!

No, ask them to mail them out on a Monday, so they aren't 'in transit' for 4 days. Or Tuesday would be okay. If you get them on Monday, they were probably taken to the PO sometime on Friday. That is all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, plus however long it takes to get them to you on Monday... Way too long, IMHO...

I thought they shipped saturdays so they fly sundays and reach their spots monday/tuesday. Guess you'd have to call them to know for sure.

The hard part is, they can hatch a day early, or a day late, if that is the case, you can't just hold them extra days or send unhatched chicks.

I asked if I could use a different shipping date but they said the USPS will only ship them on the weekends. I'm trying to knock out one of the stops with the post office to get them a day early. We'll see what they say.

I don't know who is trying to pull your leg, but there is nothing in the Domestic Mail Manual restricting the mailing of day-old poultry to the weekends. In fact, the DMM encourages mailing early in the week, to avoid the birds sitting at the PO on a Sunday.

I referenced DMM 601.9.3.2

9.3.2 Day-Old Poultry
Day-old poultry vaccinated with Newcastle disease (live virus) is nonmailable. Live day-old chickens, ducks, emus, geese, guinea fowl, partridges, pheasants (pheasants may be mailed only from April through August), quail, and turkeys are acceptable in the mail only if:

a. They are not more than 24 hours old and are presented for mailing in the original unopened hatchery box from the hatchery of origin.

b. The date and hour of hatching is noted on the box by a representative of the hatchery who has personal knowledge thereof. (For COD shipments made by a hatchery for the account of others, the name or initials and address of the hatchery or the Post Office box number and address of the hatchery must be prominently shown for this standard.)

c. The box is properly ventilated, of proper construction and strength to bear safe transmission in the mail, and not stacked more than 10 units high.

d. They are mailed early enough in the week to avoid receipt at the office of address, in case of missed connections, on a Sunday, on a national holiday, or on the afternoon before a Sunday or holiday.

e. They can be delivered to the addressee within 72 hours of the time of hatching, whether the addressee resides in town or on a rural route or highway contract route.

f. The shipment bears special handling postage in addition to regular postage, unless sent at the First-Class Mail or Priority Mail prices.

g. When live, day-old poultry is to be transported by aircraft, all provisions of the airline tariffs are met and air carriers have equipment available to safely deliver shipments within the specified time limits, allowing for delays en route in air and ground transportation.

h. Day-old poultry, originally shipped by air express or air cargo and then presented for mailing, must be in good condition and prepared as specified in 9.3.2a. through 9.3.2e.

i. Boxes of day-old poultry of about identical size, securely fastened together to prevent separation in transit, may be accepted for mailing as a single parcel, if such parcel is not more than 100 inches in length and girth combined.

So, I say request they mail on a Monday or a Tuesday. My Pet Chicken (I believe) sets eggs specifically to begin hatching on late Sunday/ early Monday, and ship them out that day.

I believe that McMurray sets eggs to hatch on Friday, shipping is always over the week end?? I received mine on Monday, they were hatched on Friday and made a longer trip and are doing great. I think someone at a stop over along the way just messed up! ...stan

Sorry about your chicks. I ordered from them last week and picked out all my fav. breeds and used my credit card. To my knowledge everything was fine and I would get my chickies on the 22nd of this month. So I get on the computer and check my email, (as I have been busy these last two days with dr apointments) and there was a email saying my phone number ws wrong, and my credit card didn't work, and if I dint' respond by 3 today that my order was cancelled. I didn't even get home till after that. What a evening! So I checked the phone number they had listed was incorrect by one number.
