HELP! Aagggh I opened an egg Mama had abandoned but it's still alive!!

What if I were to put it in a bowl with a warm/ wet washcloth, and a lamp over it for heat? Would the membrane rehydrate, because it seems awfully dry now?

It looks as if it's pulled its blood in from the membrane- I'd wet it to be sure. If so, you should make certain it's nostrils aren't covered and see where it goes...I'll get shot for saying this, but I peeled the membrane away when the blood was retracted and helped release the neck of my little chick was abandoned like that. Don't ever remove the bottom shell, as it may still be absorbing yolk. Get it warm somehow, with moisture. I used a plastic shoebox, jars full of warm water and a wet washcloth on the bottom, on a heating pad.

Good luck!

I'd probably do the heat lamp thing and keep the membrane moist. I wouldn't pick off more shell. Either wrap it in a damp paper towel or carefully wet the membrane with a Q-tip. The pictures look like the blood vessels are still there and the chick isn't ready to hatch, yet. Keep it warm and wait until the blood vessels have gone.

Okay, here is what I have done...I put the egg in a bowl wrapped in a hot, wet towel and put a lamp over it. I wet the membrane gently with the towel. I'm monitoring the temp carefully (bad day for my thermometer batteries to die), making sure the towel doesn't get too cool.

Here are some current pics and a short video. Figured I could take it to give you all a better idea of how it's doing.

ETA: So sorry for the blurry video...it looked better on the view screen...This isn't my video camera, just the video function of my still camera (can't find the charger for the video camera).

i had a similar thing happen to me ... just keep chipping away slowly at the chell and membrane as long as there's no sign of blood but dont chip any more of the bottom because the yolk may not be absorbed...

good luck !

I was trying to keep the membrane wet and move it away from it's beak a bit and I did see a tiny spot of blood.
