Help/advice for a severly savaged duck

I've been nursing two ducks back to health after stray dogs broke into our coop. My ducks' wounds aren't as bad as yours, WatchTower, but they did have bad bite wounds to the upper breast and back. We flushed the wounds with saline (just once to clean the wounds), applied topical antibiotic daily, and mixed aureomycin and electrolytes/vitamins in their water. It took three days before they'd eat anything.Early on, we kept them very warm; since they weren't eating we didn'T want them to use Their limited energy to stay warm (good advice from Amiga). We've known that if they took a turn for The worse that we'D need to do the right thing, but It's been three weeks and they are getting stronger and better. They eat, drink, play, quack and swim (in warm water daily). The wounds are looking good and healing. With these bad wounds, keeping away infection can be hard. Our ducks now live full-time in our downstairs bathtub. It is easy to clean (twice daily), it drains well, and I can fill it up easily for bath time. Ours is a cast iron tub, which means that we can use super-strong magnets to hold their water bowl in place (otherwise they'd quickly run out of water!). We put down clean towels in the tub after cleaning so they have something warm and dry to sleep on. I think it helps a little for The two survivors to be together. It will be another couple of weeks before their wounds are healed enough for them to live outside again. We are really looking forward to having our bathroom back! Good luck with your duck.

I really wish I had better news this morning and it pained me greatly to have to do it but I was forced to euthanize the duck this morning. The tissue and muscle damage was quite severe as I had mentioned earlier and even though the duck wanted to eat, it was unable to do so. One of the muscles that enabled the duck to open it's beak to eat was gone. It was also unable to sufficiently lift it's beak away from it's neck. The muscle that controlled the use and movement of it's tongue was damaged to the point where it's tongue would just roll out of it's mouth and get in the way of even trying to close it's beak. Then there was the fact that so much skin was missing that the area wasn't getting sufficient blood supply and the surrounding tissues were dying. While it wanted to live, it was slowly dying and getting worse every day.

I was attempting to hand feed the duck and I could smell the dying flesh. I was forced to recognize that even if by a remote chance I was able to save this ducks life that it's quality of life would never allow it to be released back out with the other ducks. I would be required to handfeed the duck multiple times a day and the skin would probably not grow back well enough to properly protect the ducks health.

I know it was the kindest thing I could have done for my lil friend but it hurt. While I will get more ducks, I also know that each and every one of them has a unique personality and that cannot be replaced.

I am still trying to remove the raccoon fas a threat to the animals of the ranch.

Sorry for your loss.

WatchTower, sorry for your loss. Valiant efforts of trying tho, if only everyone were so thoughtful toward the health, happiness, safety & well-being of their ducks!

Do you have access to a live trap for the raccoon? I bought mine at a hunting/sport goods sore, I think $25/2pk and have had fair success at trapping those critters.

Sorry for the loss. With the injuries it sounds like it was for the best. As others have suggested, you now should focus on getting rid of the coon. They return to places they have been successful at. I don't know if you are rural, suburban or urban but I'd buy or rent a trap and take care of it ASAP.
