Help? ANOTHER one died!

Treating chickens for Cocci, will not harm them. Cocci can kill very fast,if that is what they have.
I just called our local supplier and they do have Corid. It comes in a 16-oz bottle and is for cattle, although they did say it can also be used for chickens. I need to figure out dosage. Just checked and found a Corid Calculator online, so hopefully we can figure it out.

I think this sounds like the best bet so far, since it can't hurt them if we treat it and that's not the problem. Now it's just a dosage question

Thank you!

New straw or hay? There is a shrub here called a lupin that drops a small bean, if it gets caught up in a haying machine and baled, the animal that receives it can be poisoned. Its a long shot, but you never know.

I would for sure add new material to the old. that should be done once a year on dirt floored coops. Dig out a bit of the old and toss in some new! Cant hurt!
Yes, I think I'll do this also (re the sand). I don't know about the straw think though. I have no idea where our straw comes from.

Thanks for your thoughts!! These are so helpful!

Some symptoms of Coccidiosis are,runny/watery poop(may or may not contain blood)fluffed feathers, lethargic, not eating/drinking properly. If symptoms match, purchase Corid(amprolium). Dosage for Corid powder is 1/2 tsp per gallon of water,Dosage for Corid liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water. Treat all chicks for 5 days,do not give vitamins during treatment(interferes with medication)give vitamins after treatment.
I found this in info.

So last question re Corid -- I believe I've read that it's okay to eat the eggs while the birds are on Corid. Just checking ... is that right?

I would not chance it. I read that it should not be fed to laying hens in production. My vet specifically said dont give it to layers. Now if the birds are adults there is definitly a need to use it, but i think the warning is because the eggs might be consumed.

What wormer did you use? Dawg is very knowledgeable about chicken illnesses especially worming. He asked earlier, but i think you might have missed it.

Thank you, Reurra for your thoughts. We haven't been eating the eggs, as I'm a bit nervous about doing so. Only a few more days and then a "cool down" period while they get the antibiotic out of their system was my thought.

They were wormed with Safe-Guard (fenbendazole) at 3cc per gallon of water for two days. We avoided the eggs for two weeks after that time.

It does look like we have another bird failing. My favorite, darn it! She's a little bantam named Dizzy because as a chick she would turn in circles when we were trying to herd the flock between their outside pen and their inside coop. Funny little thing and friendly as they come. But Dizzy is showing some of the same symptoms. Listlessness, a dirty backside. She's eating and drinking, but looks to me like she's failing. ....

Try giving her a flush if you can.

Dirty backside might be a sign of something bigger.

The flush i give is:

1 tbls Molassass
1 tbls Honey
1 clove crushed garlic, the fresher the better, dried does not work so well

I add milk to some crumbles, add in the ingredients and stir it well. I make it into a paste. I then offer only this and water. The water needs to have apple cider vinegar, with mother is best. Buttermilk is better than regular milk. Plain, unsweetened yogurt is even better. Find the yogurt that has biffidus and cultures in it. I use a brand called iOGO.

Thanks so much for this suggestion! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help.

I'm a wee bit hesitant right now to do this though only because she's getting this Corid for cocciodosis (hope I've spelled that right). I feel like we need to complete this treatment, which ends on Monday before we start something else. What do you think?

Corid treatment only. A flush can do great things, but i would stick with one treatment at a time.
