HELP! asap!--update with pics

Go ahead put on the neosporin and if you have a small old Tshirt you can use that to cover her back. Put it on over her head and tie the ends loosely so that it stays in place. This should keep it clean and keep her from pecking the area. Keep her away from others until healed.

The keets I had were down to the bone/muscle and neosporin healed them and they are fine. I sounds like she will be okay.

I have had this happen to two of my hens... neo worked great on my buttercup hen, she had muscle showing on her thigh and it healed up over time. I used a no pick ointment called rooster booster on the guinea with the same issue. Keep her from the others and give her all the good vitamin packed stuff you can to eat, lots of water and she will be fine. So sorry for all your worry......wishing you all the best...

Just read your post .......keep us posted. please....

Wow....so sorry to hear what happened..First i would want her to be calm and quiet, I would try t clean the area
with a Betadine solution, and warm water, and pat it dry. There are some products on the market that are great
for wound care. Mind you I use this on our horse, it's called cut n heal, it provides a barrier and boy does it help
heal wounds!!! I'm talking shot gun blast to the chest kinda nasty. The other product is new on the market... it's
called VETERICYN it can be used on horses, poultry, livestock and dogs and cats(can also use it around the eyes)
it really works MUCH PRICIER THEN CUT N HEAL. check your local feedstore or petsmart. you can also look it up
(sorry i don't have the link)
We used the Veterycin on fowl pox when one of the birds eyes closed, and on summer sores. Good Luck

A good thing to keep around for cleaning wounds is betadine. You can find it in pharmacy sections of grocery stores or feed stores. If you have any bottled water around, just squirt enough betadine in a bottle to make it look like tea or even weak tea. That should be enough to treat the area by flushing it, or just by pouring over the open areas to wash it out. The betadine you buy in the store is concentrated. The other advice here about neosporin, etc. is great. Neosporin, or a triple antibiotic ointment without pain reliever, is available at Dollar Stores, as well. Good luck with your bird!

Last weekend a fox attack which left 6 hens dead saw my poor roo torn badly on his back. As we are miles from anywhere I placed on stitch across each of his most gaping wounds with sewing silk and cleaned with antiseptic. I thought he would inevitably die.
A week later and he is back to being alpha male.

So, if the wounds definitely need stitching find a local vet. (or do as I did), they do not have to be avian specialists, stitching is stitching. Aspirin works well for the pain.

Keep your girl warm, offer lots of food and treats, and you may well be pleasantly surprised.....they are tough creatures,

Good Luck,

Sandie
