Please someone help me, my cockerel has just died in my arms and was struggling to breath and making squeaking noises when breathing, he had an extremely dark purple comb amd then died, I have 6 other chickens and really don’t know what to do, I don’t know whether it’s coccidiosis because there was blood in some poo that I noticed and was looking last night and we were going to order some treatment for it, but then I am also worried that it could be avian flu?? Please help me, I really don’t want it to spread, please help!!

Sorry about your cockerel :(

How old are your birds?
Please take some photos of the birds, housing and the poop.
Where are you located in the world and what type of treatment did you order?

Avian Influenza - is it prevalent where you live?
Do you have any more birds that are showing symptoms - lethargy, not eating/drinking, etc.?

Thank you for your reply, we havent ordered anything yet and the chickens were hatched in may 2020, we are in wales in the uk. I will take photos of the poop now, it is brown with lumps of red blood it is pitch black here but we are all going to go outside and clean the coop, is there any suggestions of what I can give them to prevent it for now, thanks

Birds that old should have built resistance to Coccidia found in their environment, but if you are seeing blood in the poop, then treating for Coccidiosis is a good idea.
Since you are in the UK check your pet store for Harker's Coxoid which is Amprolium. Directions for use are on the bottle.

Blood in the poop can be from other things too.

we Have just come back out and discovered blood splattered inside and outside the coop,
Do you have more than one cockerel, could the one that died have been in a fight - did you check his body for wounds?
Blood spattered inside and out of the coop sounds like a predator attack or some type of fight.

We keep our chickens fully enclosed inside an Avery, I have never seen the cockerels fight before( we only had 2 but now we have 1 but will be getting rid of him as he attacks me every time I go to the chickens) I find it very unlikely that the other cockerel killed him, he didn’t have any wounds on him so I’m thinking a respiratory problem. Tonight the Alive cockerels comb was bleeding at the back and so was a hen, no predictor would be able to get in at all.
