HELP Aspirated duck

When you took him to the vet, did they test any of his poop? On your invoice it might say "direct smear" or "gram stain".
No, they didnt run any diagnostics, they kept saying that they were not avian specialists bc the only place in my state accepting patients and open on the weekend was an emergency hospital. they kept citing that they didnt have the equipment etc to test his stool.

There is one place with bird veterinarians taking new patients about 3hrs away, but they were closed all weekend so hopefully i can talk my way into getting him seen tomorrow!!!
I just hope he can hang on that long

he allegedly gained .3 lbs between friday and saturday but i think thats a fluke since I can feel he’s gotten skinnier
It’s probably not a fluke, when emaciated animals or humans begin to get nutrients again the body will start accumulating and retaining fluid as the first step in repairing itself, so that little gain was possibly fluid.
Same thing happened to my gander, it freaked me out because I thought he was getting ascites at first.

Update on Booby:
we finally got an appointment with an avian vet! If booby can make it until 3pm, we’re good!
The most major concern right now is emaciation rather than the aspiration. The fluid in his lungs either worked itself out of their or settled (? physiology was my worst grade in college lol)
Either way, the risk from the aspiration is at least not the worst of the concerns right now. i definitely overfed him and it came back up and then he aspirated on that, so no more tube feeding for me until the vet demos and teaches me all the math behind the amount of food at each feeding. Ugh that was definitely the worst feeling in the world. Learned my lesson not to rush when doing risky emergency medical aid to my duckies unfortunately it was at booby’s expense. But I am glad he at least had thise two feedings because he was starting to slip away really fast before.

For anyone looking for alternative methods of hand feeding before resorting to tube feeding, I suggest placing the duck in some water (if its winter or cold, make sure he is already staying indoors where it is warm and do this inside and use room temp or lukewarm water in a small bath tub or little plastic bath. I scattered mealworms on top, sprinkled a lot of chick grit along the edges, and plopped bite sized fruit (cutting large grapes in half etc) and veggie treats in one at a time so he could “hunt”

That worked for a time until he really didnt even have the energy for that, so then I started mimicking a horse feedbag with my hand. I placed small treats like mealworms or even just plain feed in my palm and then closed my fingers around it like an open fist and kept putting his bill inside. He didnt love this and would pull away but when i kept at it, he’d start investigating with his mouth, taking in a little bit of food each time. That at least whet his appetite for eating grapes and mealworms normally out of my hand.
After the tube feeding and the pill feeding, booby is wary of my hands near his mouth and suspicious of the food i offer. I used these methods to reintroduce food (though he is still emaciated and not eating) just to sustain him until i can see a vet. I also won back his trust by allowing him to cuddle and sleep on my lap for a couple hours each night. He misses his sister wives and sleeping alone must just be awful and scary when youre this sick and used to being with your flock, so i gave him all my attention and all the cuddles.

Have you been to the vet yet?
still at the vet! they took an xray and it looks like the gi tract is inflamed meaning enteritis 😭
they dont know if its parasitic, bacterial, or viral but they are sending me home with dewormer and a new antibiotic. they also said metronidazole is more effective but technically illegal bc the fda says ducks are food animals? Is there away around this?
they also have not done any fecal sampling which is odd, when they get back with booby I’ll ask for that.

I am able to get emeraid food from them and theyre about to teach me tube feeding. I just hope its not viral enteritis 🥺🥺

Will they sell you the metronidazole? That really would be best. My vest will prescribe both metronidazole & Baytril if I sign a form promising never to eat the bird. Ask them if you can bet some Baytril too in case he also has a gram-negative infection. Baytril & metronidazole were prescribed to me twice.

If they will not sell you those drugs, you could buy them online without a prescription.

just asked for a gram stain test and they said it’s negligible bc she said she only uses one if shes looking for a fungal compenent? which confused me bc i thought its for bacteria?
But i did just ask about the metronidazole form so hopefully we can get him on that.
Booby came back from xrays really dehydrated so theyre giving fluids too
Booby is the most expensive duck ive ever encountered lol but i just hope we can save him in time 🥺

they said no to metronidazole she did however prescribe sulfultrimethyl which she said is the next best thing

@casportpony they said i should only give panacur once? Booby is 3.5 ish lbs and they gave him a .3mL dose and advised i give that dose to all the other ducks at home JUST ONCE
however I’ve read that panacur should be given for a few days consecutively and that dosages should be more like .23mL PER pound? She only gave me enough doses for single .3mL doses for my four other birds, is panacur available at farm supply stores if i need to give more doses?
