Help! Ate Nightshade!!

You could also try a molasses or Epsom salt flush if you're very worried. She's an adult, right? The molasses flush is 1 pint molasses to 5 gallons water, given for no more than 8 hours. It'll have a laxative effect. Epsom salt flush is 1 tsp salt to a half cup of water, poured or carefully squirted down her throat twice daily for 2-3 days being very careful not to aspirate the hen.

thank you! I'm sorry but do you know how many parts molasses to water it is? thanks

My chickens will eat the berries if they find them ripe and the occasional leaf or two every year, but I've never had a chicken ingest enough to do any damage, they seem to know their limits. We try to wipe it out when we find the plants, but we have a wooded area on our property that we always seem to miss one or two in. I did some panicking the first few times, but none of them ever exhibited any symptoms and I don't think the same chicken ever ate it twice. Almost like they were sampling small amounts to check it out before gorging themselves.

thank you! its a relief she'll probably be fine.

I can’t speak from expertise but a little experience. I’ve had the exact same thing happen— all the way up to having the chicken in a bin in the house while I tried to figure out what to do. We ended up watching her overnight and the next day inside. We saw no symptoms of poisoning (probably due to only a couple of leaves being ingested) and she went back outside. If I’d known about the molasses I might have tried that though.

Hopefully it goes ok with your hen too.

We too have deadly nightshade plants pop up every year, and I do try to remove every one as I find them. The chickens free range where they are, and there's never been a problem. I think offering them in quantity to confined chickens would be bad, but given lots of free range choices, all will probably be fine.
Before I knew what they were, I let them grow in the horse pasture, and fortunately the horses never ate them! It's actually a very handsome plant...
Here they pop up anywhere that we disturb the soil, so apparently the seeds live a long time, and only need exposure to grow. At least it's easy to pull out of the ground!
