HELP!!! baby chicks dying--no clue why:(

maybe he has an injury to the "jaw"...maybe out of alignment, popped out, or even broken..causing the swelling..

is he not able to peck at all?

are you able to go to a vet?

I'd give some aspirin..try and bring the swelling down..1 (325mg) tablet crushed into 1 gallon of water..
(some suggest stronger dose)
also try warm cloth pressed gently on area...

only use plain aspirin, nothing else.

maybe you can make up some soupy feed, and give by large syringe or dropper..

I had some similar issue, with our last order of 25 chicks and 30 pheasants.

Now we had the chicks in one half and the pheasants in the other. I didnt loose any chicks but my husband lost 9 out of 37 of the pheasants they shipped within the 1st week.

I had a few guesses. He kept lowering the light and I kept raising it up telling him it was too hot. (his side, the pheasants) I made it clear he wasnt to touch my chicks.

Also he gave them some grass in thier side of the brooder.

Gasping, weakness, and death.

I guessed A) they were falling asleep under the light and not getting up for a drink of water in time. Or B) Gape worm or some other type of worm maybe interduced by the grass.

My hubby got his but chewed and lights raised and precautionary spectrum dewormer and then we didn't loose anymore.

Just a thought.
Hope you don't loose anymore

Oh heres another factor to my story

the pheasants were on chick starter the 1st few days until we got them game stater which is a higher protein its like 28% vs 20% Maybe the broilers require more protein?

that's what my husband blamed it on.
hmmm

i know this is an old one but it is a respratory infefction just had mine die for it. also shipped chicks

My chicks have been doing the same thing and it breaks my heart.. they are fine and then a short while later they are gone.. I'm new to raising chickens and only had one hen and a rooster when they had babies.. I really hope we can save the rest. We have lost 3 out of 7 so far.

What did you find out? I just lost two chicks as well due to similar issues. Mine are in a old half of a dog create inside my enclosed shed with heating lamp and hay for beading. The two chicks that died where about two weeks old and just started falling down not wanting to move and doing the beak deal as if gasping for air. I know these things happen but what should I do to prevent loosing more is it ok for my other chicks to be in the same box

Same problem. Lost several out of 30. Three black silkies, two buff silkies, one white, one blue, one Cochin and one Dutch partdrige. All bantam. My second batch. I only lost one out of my first. 26 sebrights. ( 12 silver and 13 golden) they'd be alright. Then weak, chirping and gasping then dead the next day.
