a bumpy dirt road in Florida
I happened to spot one of my chickens carrying a baby duckling as I walked past. I grabbed it and ran to the house and saw that it's top beak is almost completely ripped off right at/below the nostrils. It is just sitting on by a bit of material. It's tongue looks intact and not injured. It was stressed at first but has settled in and now looks quite content. I gave it a slurry of hand feeding formula and water. Will the top beak grow out at all? Can it survive with that small a beak. When it settled down more I was going to look at it and see if perhaps I could do something to steady it, or perhaps make a artificial top beak....

Pic Posted.... feeding slurry of hand feeding formula and water. No Bleeding now. Has been grooming itself. Owww Poor little thing. It seems quite happy now and is acting like my others had at it's age, I'm just sure that has to hurt..... I have it by itself, but near my baby chicks so it doesn't feel alone.

I live in Mexico and there are no vets nearbye. A friend had a young parrot and an older one tore it's top beak nearly off. I brought over some JB Weld quicl drying epoxy and we put a little on the edge of the two pieces and put them back together then we mounded ap a bit more aver the break and let it set up. It's been 5 months and the bird is doing just fine. They fes it soft food for a few days but now it's back tio breaking seeds etc with no problems. In time your duck should have a whole new beak. Good luck

I haven't tried this so not sure how effective it is, but I read on here of others using a bit of superglue to fix broken/cracked beaks on both chickens and ducks.

Maybe clean it really good, and see if you can align it, and then put just a drop on there. I think I would try to have someone help me so I could have something over it's nostrils so that it couldn't breath in the fumes, and to make sure I didn't get any on the nostrils.

Feeding the baby bird hand rearing feed, or a slurry of the normal ducks feed are both good ideas. Others have posted that the slurry in a deeper container helped. Some have posted about the top beak being torn/ripped off, and the bird woudl scoop up the feed with the bottom beak in order to eat. So I guess where there is a will, there is a way!

Best of luck to your little duckie!

I agree with the epoxy idea. We have used it on everything from swans, turtles and even horses. It will get hot so be sure to only use a little at a time and not to get any in its nose. Good luck

Thanks for the ideas! I was thinking of the fiberglass finger nail kits w/ the super type glue, but I can find the expoxy also, so I'll give it a try..... Thanks for your help & ideas!
