I have two 5 week old pekings and haven't taken them out of their cages in about 5 days or so. Today I took one out and noticed she was limping and her leg was broken or dislocated. What do I do????? Her foot is limp and I'm scared!

A little update. She seems to limp a bit and be a bit off balance because her left foot seems to turn in. MY guys were in a bit of a small cage could they have grown wrong?? They are in a larger one now. Should I try and splint the foot? I don't know what to do!

Okay, I would start with niacin supplements . . . what are you feeding them?

And I would get them into a warm tub of water deep enough to float in as many times a day as I could - like three or four, ideally. This strenghthens the muscles, and also helps tendons, takes weight off the feet, improves circulation. Pekins can have leg problems due to their rapid growth and size, but you can help them out.

I realize life is not ideal, but they were in their cage for five days, so that could cramp them up. Can you get them out daily at least for warm tub swims?

Thanks for joining the forum.

I feel terrible, like a bad neglecting parent. I can believe how fast they are growing and I had them in too small of a cage. I know it. I have them in a much larger cage now and will definitely have them in the tub more often. Like I said about 5 days / week ago they were walking and zipping around the tub like it was their job. Then this week was rather hectic and I neglected them a bit and this happens. It's a terrible feeling. I just want to make sure that I can fix them problem if possible before it is too late! So should I not worry about splints or bringing to a vet? Just niacine and tub time for now?

Also with the niacine can I get that anywhere? Walmart? And do I crush it and put it in their feed or water or both?

Hi pfost, don't worry, I had this same problem a few weeks ago with my khaki Hazel who could barely walk. You'll be pleased to know that with niacin and some TLC she's now zipping around the pond and garden like an olympic athlete

You can buy regular niacin at any pharmacy, crush 100 - 150mg and add it to their water. What are you feeding them? Flock raiser has adequate niacin for ducklings, but chick starter doesn't, so that's when you need to supplement niacin.

I just went and checked on my ducklings (I have 6) and noticed that a couple of them have turned in legs. I just put them in the bath for the first time (they are about a week old and hope that's okay) will definitely be getting my boyfriend to get niacin. They are on chick starter feed. Is it okay for all the ducks to drink the water with the vitamins in it? Probably a stupid question I know.
