Does anyone know if wood ashes can be used for this same purpose? I heard from an old timer that she dusted with wood ashes to kill lice.

Yes, it is gardening dust. It has widely been used through the years and is accepted for quick relief from an infestation.

After you get rid of the lice you can put wood ash in their dust bathing spot and it will help prevent future infestations.
