Help bumblefoot getting worse

Before I wrapped it and after. She doesn’t want to use her foot. Sorry about how far away the picture it she was very upset when I finally lay her go. She is eating. I don’t know if she is drinking but I hope she is.

I'm glad at least one of them looks somewhat normal. That poor right foot. Was the picture of the swelling before it broke open, I assume? Hopefully now it won't close over and blow up again. The nail color is something else, probably wide spread bruising. Are the two feet about the same temperature? I wouldn't worry too much so long as that right foot doesn't go cold. You can also pinch her toes on that side to make sure she has feeling in the foot. It doesn't seem to be much of a bleeding risk, so aspirin might make her a little more comfortable. It's only meant to be used for a couple of days. I buy the "low dose" 81mg chewable kind. Trying to divide a regular 325mg pill for a single bird is a lot more guess work on how much you're actually giving- and the chewable kind tastes decent, so I grind it into a powder and pour it onto a piece of watermelon (or whatever wet treat your bird likes so the powder will stick to the treat).

Ok. I am bringing her home tomorrow so when she is home I can leave it unwrapped. I will see about pain med for her. I think she can feel her foot because when I move her toes so the sit right she dose her sad chirp. She makes it when something hurts. I think her better looking foot is cooler but I am not sure. I will check when I go up to take her home. If it is swollen again should I do the process again? I am going to try peroxide to help get all the bacteria out

Peroxide should only be used on the 1st major cleanout because it actually keeps things from healing up if used over and over. Based on the picture with the wound open, as long as it doesn't poof up and make another abscess looking thing, I would stick to using something like Vetricyn. It doesn't have to be Vetricyn for poultry - just the regular version will work fine. (it's bigger and more cost effective) The red tissue on the edges will grow some and scab over because that's how her body is going to heal the hole left by the infection, so if you start to see it fill in and scab over, that's her healing and don't pick it off.

By now I'm sure you'll notice if there's a new pocket of infection - Smell is the other major tool for detecting infection. If it's going to be unwrapped while she's in her soft bedding, I would probably skip using ointment- that will just make everything she stands in stick to it. An alternative to aspirin is meloxicam- that is well tolerated in chickens but is a vet prescription only - if you have a family vet, maybe give them a call and explain the problem to see if that's an option.

Don’t have a vet I can use. Closest is and hour away and is really expensive. My parents said they would only take me if I payed and my bird was life or death. Aspirin it is. I will pick up some tomorrow. So should I peroxide it once to make sure it is cleaned out good? As weird as it sounds I will make sure this is no bad smalls coming from her foot. I will tell you how she looks tomorrow when I pick her up.

She still has her other side of her foot swollen and it has some liquid braking through next to her scales. Will the same thing probably happen? Her skin is so fragile since she is old. The bottom of her foot still have a small cut but it doesn’t have anything in to except the liquid. I lightly put pressure oh her foot and it started to gush out. It clean as much out as I could. And her foot looked a lot less swollen on the bottom. Do you think the swelling is causing her purple toes and nails? It looks like her quicks and turning purple. I know her show days are over but I want her nicely healed and feeling better for however long she has left. Should I do a lower dose of aspirin since she is old?

Ugh. Vets for chickens aren't an option for me either- growing up I had a vet I could call - but it seems the 'old country vet' is a thing of the past. So yes, aspirin it is. Walmart sells the chewable 81mg "low dose" in a 2 or 3 pack for cheap, but any store should have it. Works great for headaches too. Dose wise, it's mostly based on the approximate weight of the bird- smallest effective dose is always preferable. You could add in some probiotics (like Save-a-chick packets) while she's getting aspirin - again, only for a couple of days.

Yes, I'd say the purple toenails is likely a related problem to that foot. It could be bruising or it could be the swelling is decreasing blood flow, hard to know which, if only they would tell us.

Anywhere there's still a bubble where she's making unhappy things inside, I would treat with peroxide once. Having a syringe or two around to make sure there's enough pressure to treat the whole bubble is very useful. Pour some peroxide (1st time only) or Vetricyn into a little container and suck it up with the syringe. Then use the syringe to get up into the icky places. Then of course clean the syringe for the next time.
