I'd say Wyandotte, Australorp or Orpington. Those we've had have been good parents AND gone broody oh so often. However ours have been rather good layers. From what I've learned temperament and such varies in the different parts of the world, but our birds of these breeds have been super friendly.
Wyandottes and Orpingtons exist in bantam variant too (I expect they'll not eat as much as a standard) - and several colours/patterns (though I don't know which you'll find in SA.)
What do you mean by interesting though? Feathered feet, crests, rumpless or pretty colours?
