Hi!!

Spot my 2 week old silkie slowed down a little the last couple days (still eating and drinking) just taking more naps. She had one kind of bloody poop that got caught in her vent but was cleaned quickly. She has has watery poops.

Now last night she started gasping for every breath through her mouth. She sneezes occasionally too. She is a fighter and is trying very hard. I’m wondering should I do a small suction on her nostrils?

I am treating one of her sisters for a possible infection right now. However vet is closed and won’t be able to go get antibiotics until Tuesday now.

Any tips for me to get spot to breath through her nose at least? It is making it a little hard for her to drink I am thinking.

I am treating their water with corrid now

Thank you very much

Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your silkie:(
It is more then likely that she has a respiratory infection of some kind, as well as the coccidiosis, which is overloading her system.

What kind of infection does her sister have?

If you can get some pictures of her, as well as her poop that may help.

Getting her to a vet may be her best chance, if you can get her to pull through until Tuesday that is your best bet.

Good luck, and keep us posted. I'll tag some members who may also be able to help.

I would try to find any vet that is open over the weekend. We have area vets that have hours in evenings, weekends, and holidays especially for ill bird.

Photos of your babies, their poop and your brooder set-up:)

What dosage of Corid are you using?
What are you using to treat for possible infection?
You're asking if you should suction the nostrils - do they have runny noses or mucous?

If they have mucous, just try to wipe the nostrils clean, I'm not sure about suction.

I would definitely continue the treatment of Corid if you saw bloody poop. The gasping and sneezing is concerning - ensure they have proper ventilation, that the crops are emptying and if you are using a heat lamp that it is not Teflon coated.

He may be moulting his feathers, it is the time of year (in the USA) that they will be moulting. Moulting happens every year, and it is when the bird will shed its feathers and grow new ones for the Winter.

He may also not be receiving the right diet, which could be the reason for feather loss. What are you feeding him?

Is the area where he's living very dusty? That may be the reason for his sneezing. It could be something more sinister though, maybe a respiratory infection. I would recommend getting him to a vet.

Is it possible for him to get another duck friend? That will stop him from missing you so much during the day.
