So I just realized today that the chick starter I've been feeding my babies is meant for turkeys, quail, etc. at 24% protein, it's not the chick starter/grower meant for chickens at 20%.
I have one batch of 2 1/2 wk olds and a batch of 4 day olds all eating this stuff.

I don't know how I ended up with the wrong bag, other than it's confusing and it says chick starter! (by Dumor)

What can happen with them eating 24% protein vs. the 20%?? Will there be some effects? Do I need to go to the store to replace this ASAP??

I don't think it will kill your chicks. Lots of people use gamebird starter for their chicks...lots of protien. Maybe not the BEST food for your chicks, but you can probably get away with it for a day or two.

gaeamama,

Don't sweat it, they will be just fine.. At one time I feed a 28% protein starter/grower loved how good the bid grew on it but didn't like the paying $20.00 a 50 lb bag..

well, good. I was worried there'd be some bad effects.

I'll get them the appropriate chick starter as soon as I can.

Nothing bad, just vigorous growth from the higher protein levels. Bigger birds!!

thanks guys for reassuring me. they're still eating it. Last night I was starting to worry that I'm growing some freak chickens! I have some 3wk olds that are feathering out so quickly! some of them are silkies... I was thinking they look like crazed fluffed out velociraptors right now.
