i have a cinnamon queen 3 day old chick. She had pasty butt so we washed it off and applied some Vaseline around her vent, when we put her back in the brooder she looked like she was going to poop but was straining as if she couldn’t. I already have apple cider vinager in their water. What should I do??!

Assuming the chick is still with us, a constipated chick should be given oil.

I recommend coconut oil in its solid form since it's safer and easier to administer than liquid. Use about half a teaspoon, inserting tiny bits into her beak, then gently massage her crop to disperse the oil.

Essential that they have chick grit mixed in with their feed, or access to some soil from your garden, a little clump of short grass with the roots and soil attached is great for them.

I had one with pasty that also got constipated. I ground it's food in a food processor so it may be easier to digest in the future and also fed boiled egg yolk and put ACV in water for prevention for a while after I fixed the issue. Those are just a couple things I read to do for chicks with pasty. But the coconut oil that was suggested above helped to solve the constipation. I have more chicks coming in the mail around Tuesday and hope I don't have this issue again. But if I do I know what to do now and it won't be as stressful and worrie-some as before.

I’ve got a Buff Orpington chick that’s about three, maybe four weeks old who has what seems like chronic constipation... I suspect s/he isn’t drinking enough, so I’ve started mixing the chick feed with some water. EVERYONE LOVES the mixture! It seemed to help my Buff a bit, but s/he still has to strain a lot to poop. Will my other chicks get diarrhea if I mix a little butter into the water and feed mix? (I can’t separate the Buff from the other seven chicks right now.)

Try coconut oil instead. It has lots of beneficial stuff in it and is really good for feathers, skin and eyes. Super stuff.
