Help chicken with piece of bone sticking out if wing

Can you very gently open the wing out and take a picture so it shows the exposed bone in relation to the chickens body and wing?

I found her like this in the morning. I just sprayed blue kote on the injury. And wrapped it

What antibiotic? If you start antibiotics don't give it willy nilly...do a full course of them.

This is my opinion based on what I’ve done with wing injuries here.
If that bone is the scapular or clavicle ( I just can’t tell from the pictures) and none of the boned that attaches to it are broken then this is a flesh/muscular wound and the chances of full recovery are good.

If there are broken bones and no pieces are missing providing you can keep the wing immobile; tape the wing to the chickens body then there is a good chance of the bones fusing. It’s then a matter of hygine and fighting any possible infection.
If you are unable, or unwilling to take her to a vet, you do need to get some medication.
You need antibiotics to fight any infection. I don’t know what you can get in your area.
I would also get Metacam for pain reliefe. It comes with a syringe. Two graduations on the syringe once a day.
I expect some will disagree with me but for such an injury here I use a paste called Stockholm Hoof Tar.
If you use this then you need to apply lots to the wound ensuring you completely cover every area where the muscle, or bone is exposed.
If there are no bones broken then there is no need to keep the wing immobile.

Best option take her, to a vet.

do you have a university near you with a vet clinic? Most of them have them if around and large. She will end up being unable to use this wing. The problem is how much money are you willing to spend.

Myself, would do as you did and stabilize the bone back to nearest bone. If you can get that bone as close as you can to the other part, wrap it with vet wrap and give her antibiotics to treat for bone infection and keep gangrene from setting in, you still have the issue of her not being able to support her wing any longer. She probably will never use this wing again but miracles can happen.

The strongest antibiotic you can get is Pennicilin and the thickness of it will cause her great pain because she will need 3-4 doses of it and well, chickens don’t have much places to repeat that long. Just to give you an idea of pain from Pcn, 3 cc’s given to a horse in its neck, will make that entire large muscle become sore for days. If you do use it, the best way to help some with that, is to push it over 5 minutes. Uh huh. That slow and they will still hurt because a 17 gage needle is required to push since so thick.


I am so sorry you are hurting with her. Things like this are rough. I love all of my animals but if this was my bird, who will if not already in shock and major pain, have consequences that will continue to be a detriment to her health from her own buddies trying to hurt her because she is hurt, to not being able to defend herself any longer, etc. Because it is a broken bone, Osteomyelitis is your biggest problem AFTER the immense pain she is going through. And it is very very hard to avoid and kill. The pennicin if used, will create sore muscles and she may not be able to handle it before she decides to die. You know how chickens are. I have had many who are like, nope too much for me, I love you but see you on the other side.

If the patient begins to act lethargic and quit eating, you might suspect infection and start an oral antibiotic.
