A 3 week old baby chick got into the dog pen 4 hours ago. My dog got her and ripped her side open. Her guts were hanging out and I figured she'd die within minutes. I just got home from class and she's still alive. I had made her comfortable in a box, but she's so awake that she even flew.

HELP!!! My friend suggested asphyxiation in a jar but it's too hard to bring myself to that.

HELP
!

I am sorry this happened. Can you post a picture? I am thinking that you can put them back inside of her and stitch it

Okay, so I tried to put them back in, but turned white and had to sit down. I gave it another go using a Q-tip and managed to push them all into a hole slightly smaller than a dime. I put gauze and a couple band-aids over it. It probably won't survive

If it makes it through the night, does anyone know where to get stitching material from?

you can get sutures from the farm store. The baby will also NEED to be on an antibiotic. I am not sure at this point if stitches is a good idea, sometimes closing a wound like that can lead to more problems. If it were my baby I would start an antibiotic ASAP, change bandage daily being sure to clean with iodine and use a sterile bandage to cover the hole. Good luck!

It sounds like you really want to keep it. If it was my chick and it was acting as normal possible, the guts weren't ripped, not bloody in side or any intestinal leakage, I'd flush any dirt with saline solution (like saline nasal spray), clean the skin area with betadine, superglue the edges of the skin together, then watch it for signs of infection. If the guts are torn, culling is best. If it lives, the superglue seal will eventually drop off.

Yes, it made it through the night, but is very lethargic. She won't even open her eyes hardly.

I gave her water with ACV and sugar. Don't know if that will help, but i figure it won't do much harm. Thanks for the tips on how to manage this! thanks a bunch!
