Speckled Sussex Chickens, Light Brahma Chickens, Easter Egger Chickens are the breeds im thinking of getting to start our pullet ONLY flock... i have 3 kids who will want to actively involved with them im sure... and the problem i keep thinking about is I live in arizona... the prescott area... so we get both cold and hot temperatures.. and i want to make sure they will do okay here before we get them... please let me know if you think these breeds of birds will do well with our family as well as where we live... thank you :) all help is MUCH appreciated.

I love choosing chicks to order! They are so much fun, enjoy!

You might not know but most EEs start to lay at 30 weeks, instead of the usual 20 :).

How many are you getting?

I really enjoy both my SS and EE but neither are great layers. Is egg production a concern? If yes you might want to include some better layers. I will say that both have done well in our extreme weather. We are in Colorado so I would think close to temps in your area. Good luck and have fun.

If you want really friendly chickens I suggest a D'Uccle. They are bantam though so the smaller eggs may be something to think about for your family. My daughter uses hers for 4H showmanship and she is very calm. We also love our cochin (not a good layer). Our EE is very friendly too (she started laying at 25 weeks).

I was origianlly considering those exact breeds but as where i live we are not allowed to have straight runs only pullets. and they are so hard to sex most breeders only offer them in straight runs.
