Help, Coccidiosis

I don't know if I can get Corrid, I will be checking with the feed store today. The Buff who is sneezing/coughing is eating and drinking well and seems normal in every other way. I can isolate her if necessary, I have cleaned out our small portable coop and can put her in there.

Sulfadimethoxine (brand names Di-Methox, Albon, Sulfamed G) is a sulfa drug that will treat the most harmful strains of coccididiosis, coryza, and fowl cholera. It would be a good susbtitute for Corid if you can't find it.

Ok, I have the Corid, can someone tell me how to dose it in their drinking water?

Corid 9.6%, use 2 tsp per gallon of water for 7 days. If it is the 20% powder, use 1.5 tsp per gallon of water for 7 days. Mix a fresh drinking solution each morning and let that be the only source of drinking water. Don't feed them yogurt during treatment. Use a good quality vitamin-electrolyte & probiotic powder in the water for 3 days after the last day of treatment. Feed them pellets/crumbles and avoid scratch grains until you see normal stools again.

Thank you so much for the information. That may be something else we did wrong, we did not stop giving them scratch. We will pull everything except the crumbles. Thanks again. I really appreciate the help and hopefully we will get our ladies through this.

You're welcome. Giving scratch as a treat every so often is alright. It is just not a good idea when the intestinal tract is irritated, or in an enteritic condition. The problem with endoparasites is they can cause enteritis, and if not treated before damage is done, it can cause irreversible damage to the intestines making absorption of nutrients a problem throughout the bird's life. It can also kill.

That is good to know. We don't give them a lot but will withdraw comeplety for a while. With summer here we may just withhold the scratch until the weather gets cold again.

Coccidiosis can come from the soil, it is naturally occurring. Are they having bloody stool? If it is coccidosis they die pretty quickly without treatment (within a day or two)

Not all strains of Cocci protozoa produce blood in droppings. Warm and moist environments are where the oocysts, which sporulate the protozoa, thrive. Birds don't need access to soil to be infected with coccidiosis.
