That's how I lost my resident murder...A second hatch baby was trying to fly like it's bigger brethren and splatted on my ground...
As long as mom's looking out for it, I'd leave him alone.
Little guy looks unhappy!
Not sure what I'm seeing toward the back - hopefully not a mangled foot.
See if mom attends to it - watch from afarfor at least the next 15 minutes - hopefully baby is not too injured.
It' svery light in your photo so maybe you are out west and you have plenty of time till dark? If so, you can give mom a lot more time....(it's dark here in NJ now)
JJ
if you have a plant hanging basket -and you have hte baby in the house for the night in a warm dark place- I owuld offer it chopped grapes- though the general suggestion is don't offer them anything- but grapes are fairly neutral- hang hte baby in a hangin basket as high as you can safely in the morning as clsoe to where you found it- if mom isn't taking care of it by late afternoon- contact a rehabber- though crows are not a protected species and YOU could raise it yourself if you were inclined. I may have the info in my wildlife handboof- but crows eat a lot of meat-I think dog food is the suggested food for them primarily. It has been nearly 8 years since I rehabbed officially and I never had hte opportunity to raise a crow.
JJ.....I hope your right. I automatically thought ALL wild birds must be covered with these nasty bugs.
That bird looks like it should be able to fly by now. I was expecting something with less big bird feathers.
I bet if you keep it safe, it will figue out how to fly fast.
I have a lot of experience with crows we rescued three at different times and hand raised them. If they already have some feathers its fairly easy to raise them, if you are interested. They make great pets and then fly away in the fall or stick around depends on the crow.
What you need to do is get some canned dog food like alpo beef. The mixed up kind not the chunky kind. When the baby crow opens its moth because it is hungry you need to take some of the dog food on your finger and stick it down its throat. ( I know it sounds disgusting and is but kind of neat.) It will eat the dog food and start thinking of you as mom. Feed them every 2-4 hours during dayligh hours. I usually put them in a cloth lined basket, somthing that can be washed becuase they poop alot. They will try to poop over the edge like they do in the nest but not all makes it out.
Like I said they are lot of fun especially when they can fly and you are walking across the yard and a great big crow lands on you.
Try not to anger the parents... crows... at least city ones, have memories as long as elephants. If the researchers who band the crows on campus come near, I hear they get dive bombed and attacked as soon as they are spotted by a crow.
