HELP! Day 22 and eggs chirping

So its day 24 and I seem to only have one chick out of 18, and he is really struggling to get out of the egg. He has a hole a little smaller than a dime so I can see his beak and it hasnt changed after 8 hours. He seems too tired to make any more progress, and isnt getting anywhere. When is it time to help him out? Or should I let it be? About 24 hours now since he pipped

First off, have you read the assisted hatch link on here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
If not read that first so you understand about the membranes and yolk absorbtion and when to stop, when to go.

This is my personal opinion and what I do with my own chicks. You need to do what you are comfortable doing. A pipper that hasn't started to unzip by 24 hours I would widen the pip hole so I could get an idea of what's going on. If there doesn't look like a problem with positioning and he looks active/alert I would put the egg back in and give it a couple more hours to try before further assisting. If after the couple hours there was still no progress I would bring him back out and start a zip. I do this in small steps each time replacing the egg (after wetting the membrane) and giving them the chance to finish. And any decent amount of blood is automatic stop wet and replace in the brooder.
If you widen the pip hole and find that he is very weak or in a position taht is going to keep him from hatching then I would start the assist but slowly and working only a bit at a time before wetting the membrane and replacing him to rest and try himself.

Remember, do what youare comfortable with. And let us know what you decide and how it goes. Good luck.

It seems like everything that can go wrong has!!! My chick has hatched yet has a herniated yolksack or something. It looks like a pink tube hanging out the back. WHAT DO I DO!!! ive googled a lot and there are so many mixed reviews, does anyone have advice or know what its chances are??

My first chick had the cord and egg goo stuck to his "belly button too". I was sure it was herniated. He's 6 months old now. Let it dry. You don't have any other chicks that hatched right? If any others have hatched or do hatch you may want to put him in his own little brooder or a little box in your brooder so the any others don't peck at it. Some put neosporin or an anti biotic on the "belly button" I didn't.

well, of course the situation worsens.

the pink tube was hanging out, which busted and now a huge sack full of yellow and green stuff is trailing behind him. Im thinking of just calling it and putting this guy out of his misery.....

im so desperate
