Hi everyone!
I hatched my first lot of chicks yesterday and I am thrilled, they all look so happy and they are chirping away and eating fine. However, I noticed one of the chicks is staying under the brooder plate constantly and won't stand properly. So I've checked it out and I found that it's vent is all crusty and looks slightly prolapsed. What do I do? Can I fix this without harming the poor little thing? Thanks in advance!

Recheck to make sure that's the vent and not the umbilical area that hasn't closed off properly, but in either case I would put a little triple antibiotic ointment on the raw area and otherwise leave it be. Perhaps put paper towels down over any bedding to prevent things from sticking to it. If it is an unclosed belly button, it should form a scab soon to protect it from infection. If it is a vent protrusion, most times those do not require therapy other than normal care.

Hi thanks for the reply! I've tried soaking it in some warm water and what I can only describe as a gel like substance came out that was yellow. Also it appears pus is now also come from its rear end. It's not bleeding as such but whatever it is wont go back in. I was hi king of perhaps some prep H or something along the same lines? Also antibiotic ointment...do you mean something like germolene? Thank you so much!

It may be unabsorbed yolk if it is the umbilical area.

Yes, germolene is fine for chickens.

I have recently had a chick with a complete prolapsed vent...it looked different than this, so if it's the vent then it is a mild case.

Yeh I've had another look and it is the umbilical area as you said. My neighbour had some neomycin spray that I've put on it, but it's just started bleeding again and pus is coming out...will the spray be enough?

Probably not. Unabsorbed yolk is a very good growth medium for bacteria. I suspect that to have any chance, you will have to take the chick to the vet. Even then it's chances aren't great.

Yeh that's not the news I wanted really...even though I'd come to that conclusion myself anyway. What causes such a thing? Because none of my other chicks have any problems.

Basically it hatched a bit too early. Since it happens much more often when eggs are incubated artificially, it's probably something to do with the temp or humidity that signalled to the chick to begin the hatch.

That would make sense...there was one that started pipping at day 20 so that might be this chick...hopefully I can sort it out. Thank you for your help, it has been extremely valuable.
