HELP... day old chick with odd protrusions

Povidone iodine ( Betadine) alao called Equate First Aid Antiseptic at Walmart in the first aid aisle would be a good antiseptic and could help to dry it out. Is there blistering under the lesions? Hopefully, others will share if they have seen this deformity before.

Dollar General Store, if you're lucky enough to be in an area they are, will have their own brand of iodine, and it will be cheaper than anywhere else, if that's the medication you choose to use.

I have some betadine in my chicken toolbox. It seems like it is probably a double hernia. One side has gone down a bit and the other chicks and keets seem to be leaving her alone. Thank you all for the kind, thoughtful advise. Hopefully she makes a full recovery. :fl

I'm glad she's still doing okay, and that one side is already reducing. Fascinating that it does seem to be a double hernia - I really had never seen it in a chick before!

I don’t think this a double hernia. Testicles are located in the abdomen near the kidneys in roosters, not near the vent.

You're thinking of testicular hernias as they happen in human males. There are other kinds of hernias, as @mischke pointed out, and even females can get them. They tend to happen in areas where muscle layers are thinner than normal, and where stresses are able to push inner tissues out through weak spots in the outer muscle layers, or can be birth defects, where the muscle layers aren't where they are supposed to be or not as thick or close as they are supposed to be.

Yea, I know there are many types of hernias—umbilical, testicular, ventral, brainstem...I worked as an RN for many decades. One person said that the chick has a double hernia, and that is usually meant to mean testicular hernia.
