This happened last night, she got loose and a dog bit her back , she is missing feathers in an area as big as a small palm, and has a gash about as long as a thumb nail and about 1/2 inch deep, cleaned out feathers sticking out of the wound, pressed it together gently to try to express some of the bacteria with the blood, she had no objection as I was very gentle, I used a dropper with some of my dogs antibiotics as the vet wants to charge way to much, but I really don't want to loose my chicken , she is somewhat of a pet, I crushed up 1/5 of the antibiotic mixed with water and have given her some but she doesn't seem to keen on me dropping water at the tip of her beak, she is happily eating the warm mash I made with layer feed oatmeal and mashed banana , but how much water does she need and any other advice would be appreciated

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry about your hen. You should post this in our emergency section for help from those that will know how to deal with this. She may require some oral antibiotics. Here is the link to that section.....https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Good luck and I hope she makes a full recovery.

Give her water 24/7. She should have it at all times. You may try some of her layer feed in the oatmeal too.

If you are still concerned about her, you can post here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Good luck with her and glad you joined!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, she should have water available all the time. Hope your hen is OK, chickens can recover from some pretty bad injuries and it sounds like you girl is acting fine so hopefully the dog didn't really get a hold of her body.. If you have Blu-Kote or something similar I would just spray her cleaned wound with that, or put something like Neosporin (without pain relief) on it. You will probably need to keep her separated from the other birds for awhile so they don't pick on the injury. If you know what antibiotic you have, you might post the name/dose you have in the Emergencies forum and somebody might be able to tell you what the chicken dose is.

awesome ! i found this through another forum ! http://avianmedicine.net/content/uploads/2013/03/09_therapeutic_agents.pdf , so i had guessed that dog antibiotics would be safe and mixed up a tiny bit last night and had her drink some through a dropper, turns out I was right cephlax is a safe drug for chickens, and i gave her around the proper dose as well, at least im quite sure i didt overdose her,

, she is eating her banana, oatmeal, layer feed mix, on her own! and moving around a bit, and 100 mg antibiotics in 1/3 cup of water and she had less than half as she dribbled some instead of swallowing, her wound is still open somewhat, but filled with clean looking congealed bloody fluid, i was mostly worried her kidney would be punctured, if it's not she should make a good recovery!, other forums on the emergencies thread really helped to reassure me she will pull through, !!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry about your chicken being bitten by the dog. As many BYC members can attest, dogs and chickens generally don't mix well, but the other BYC members have given you a good link and some good advice. If she shares her run with any other chickens, you might want to spray the wound with Blue Kote Wound dressing which is available at feed stores and hatcheries. Not only will it help protect and heal the wound, it will discourage any other chickens from pecking at it. If your not familiar with it, you can see it at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/blue_kote_wound_dressing.html. I hope your chicken has a full recovery. Good luck.
