This happened last night, she got loose and a dog bit her back , she is missing feathers in an area as big as a small palm, and has a gash about as long as a thumb nail and about 1/2 inch deep, cleaned out feathers sticking out of the wound, pressed it together gently to try to express some of the bacteria with the blood, she had no objection as I was very gentle, I used a dropper with some of my dogs antibiotics as the vet wants to charge way to much, but I really don't want to loose my chicken , she is somewhat of a pet, I crushed up 1/5 of the antibiotic mixed with water and have given her some but she doesn't seem to keen on me dropping water at the tip of her beak, she is happily eating the warm mash I made with layer feed oatmeal and mashed banana , but how much water does she need and any other advice would be appreciated
and Welcome To BYC! X3, she should have water available all the time. Hope your hen is OK, chickens can recover from some pretty bad injuries and it sounds like you girl is acting fine so hopefully the dog didn't really get a hold of her body.. If you have Blu-Kote or something similar I would just spray her cleaned wound with that, or put something like Neosporin (without pain relief) on it. You will probably need to keep her separated from the other birds for awhile so they don't pick on the injury. If you know what antibiotic you have, you might post the name/dose you have in the Emergencies forum and somebody might be able to tell you what the chicken dose is.
