So we got some new (what we thought were) girls recently (approx 8weeks ago) and one of them has grown significantly more than the others. He/she is a bluebell/blue ranger, which we've not had before so we're not used to the look of the new breed (the other girls are all different breeds as this was the last left so we've got nothing to compare to). We've also never had a roo before so no idea what to look for. This chicken is much bigger than the others and my DH suspects that is a roo, I'm not sure.

Can anyone shed any light?

Hi CTKen, if she is a he are we still able to eat the eggs? I'm a bit nervous about keeping her/him with all out girls :-S

Sorry - I keep thinking of more questions...

Do Roos make a lot of noise? I guess we won't be able to keep him if he disturbs the neighbours too much!

some roos are noisy and crow all day, like mine does.
other roos are polite and don't make much noise.
it's a wait and see thing.
if he turns out to be an excessive crower, try a no-crow collar.

Thanks for the advice and the tip on the no crow collar! I will keep my fingers crossed for a quiet Roo (now named Blue... rather than Bluebelle!)

It can also depend on the crowing from other roosters in the neighbourhood. Once one starts, it can be a noisy cycle of "I can crow louder than you" game for a while.
