Need to know if there's anything I can do about a chicken with a gash in the underneath from a dog attack. Daughter's favorite rooster. Had a dog attack this morning killed and mangled over half of my flock these are our pets. Im so hurt I really want to save this one but don't know how? I've had to put down a few already.

OMG...is it a stray dog? There was a time when a dog attacking chickens was a death sentence for the dog. Not so sure we can do that these days. I sure would want to. I'm so sorry for your losses. :hugs

Surficial wounds heal fairly quickly. I think it depends on internal damage.:(

Ok. No one else is answering, so I'll try. That wound looks really bad to me. I recently had an eagle attack and tried to save a favorite hen whose injury in the same place didn't look as bad. I gave her Epsom salt baths, used vetericyn on it daily. I added electrolytes and vitamins to her water and gave her a lot of love. After a week of us both fighting the good fight, she finally passed. At least she felt loved and peaceful during her passing. I would try those things, but I hope someone with more experience than me comes in here and can give you better advice. I'm thinking @Wyorp Rock for example.

I so sorry to hear about your losses :hugs

For this rooster, flush the wound well with betadine, saline or if you don't have those, use warm soapy water (rinse well). Trim the feathers away from the wound so you can get a better look at it and access the damage. Check him over carefully for any more wounds or punctures that may be hidden under the feathers.

Once you get a good look at the damage, if you can please post more photos that would be good.
Apply a triple antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn to the wounds.

Is he alert? Chickens can be in shock after an attack. I would offer him some sugar water or electrolytes. Plain water is fine too. He may not eat, but if you can keep him hydrated that would be good.
