One of my pullets has a torn vent. about 1/2 inch - 3/4 inch long. It is not bleeding bad but is slightly bleeding.

What should I do? Neosporin and stri-strips?? She mainly lost feathers on her rump below the vent, but the torn vent worries me.

She has been isolated with water for now.

Oh.... and I got 2 very hard hits with a 2X4 to the neighbor husky that did it. Then got my 9mm but he didn't come back...

Sorry about your hen. At the very least, isolate her with water and give her high protein things like scrambled eggs and active culture yogurt, oatmeal, etc and keep her in the dark to postpone any egglaying. Hopefully, someone else can pop in and help you with your injury question.

I would definately keep her seperated, and in the dark as much as possible. Watch for flies...antibiotic cream on the wound, after a good cleaning....and maybe soft foods, to help her poo easier. I hope she is ok. Keep us posted!

Well not good news and maybe some good news.

Upon closer inspection, she is torn from the vent up to and around the tail. I can see thigh meat...Not good...

The glimmer of hope is my other neighbor is a vet. I had her take a look and she is going to take the hen in to her office tomorrow and attempt to stitch her up. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I am so PO'd right now. I should have shot the dog. If I get a bill(even if I don't, I will have one created) the neighbor(1800 feet away) is going to be presented with it. They should have to pay right??(maybe not if I had shot their dog, but I didn't)....

I am at loss..... what is your point???

That I didn't shoot or that I said I should have.... You lost me...

Not trying to 'get my thread slammed shut'(It's two M's in slammed) but i didn't follow....

I think he/she meant she would have shot the dog.......
I had a very similar thing happened to one of my hens.a coyote got a nip of her breast area....no meat torn, just skin....I watched it , kept it clean and she is find.I hope it works out for yours as well........ keep us posted !

Nothing is getting "slammed shut" if this isnt turned into a debate over dogs again. Joe only wanted advice on how to treat his hen and made a passing comment that showed his anger and frustration. I didn't take it as any more than that. No one need stir the pot and start a rant or argument.
I wish I could be more help to you with your hen, joe. It's great that you have a vet you can call on in the local neighborhood! Let us know how she does, okay?

My hen was attacked by a dog and had patches of skin tore off. I called the vets around here and no one would treat her. All I did was made sure the wound was clean (I did not scrub it.) I put neosporin on it. It seem to keep the flies off(summer time.) I don't think I would of used stir- strips because it might of done more damage. She did not want to eat or drink I thought she was a goner. So I would take the water dish and help her drink. I did this every two hours. The next morning I offered her some hard boiled egg yolk which I had to help her eat cooled down of course. If it is cooled I would put in a heat lamp or bring her in the house where it is warm to keep her from getting to cooled. You might be able to put stri-strips on her if it is skin to skin and not touching the meat. But that would have to be your call. Good luck I hope she will be ok.

Will do Speckled...

I wasn't trying to start anything... I do realize there are strong feelings on both sides of that discussion......I try to be a good poster...

Should know more tomorrow sometime...

For now the girl seems to be resting ok. So we'll see...
