My young orphaned duck was attacked by my dog thankfully I got to them on time before it was fatal. I do believe he has a broken wing possibly near his shoulder joint on the right side of his body. I have somewhat wrapped his whole body up with vet wrap to help him feel more stable but I need advice on how to do properly as well as what do I do? I have brought him inside and secluded him to a small room with a dog crate covered with a blanket to help keep him warm and comfortable and also to hopefully get him fully out of shock. He was really starting to scare me as he was not eating, drinking or making a sound at all as well as expressions for close to 5 hours. Once I got him inside & wrapped up and tucked in his infirmary he didn’t thankfully nibble a little an drink some water. What else can I do to help him heal the best? Thank you I will greatly appreciate any and all help and input!

I would treat for shock with electrolytes first, I’ve called in the experts hopefully they’ll reply soon

Welcome To BYC
I'm sorry about your Duck, I don't know much about them.

If a wing is broken, it's best to seek vet care if possible.

I'll tag in some folks that know more about Ducks.

Is there a puncture or any open wound? This is very important to know because with the possibility of a broken bone, it would be considered an open fracture. Last year, I successfully treated 3 ducks with dog bites but no broken bones. They needed the wound cleaning but I didn't need to use antibiotics. If there is an open fracture, then oral antibiotics are essential. If it is an open fracture you are best to get a vet appointment. If that is not possible, you can get oral antibiotics from www.allbirdproducts.com
I suggest you get baytril 10% oral solution. It comes with an oral measuring syringe. I use 5mg per lb weight orally once a day. You cannot eat any eggs from the duck for 6 months after treating with Baytril.

If there is no open wound, and its not possible to see a vet, you are managing the presumed fracture well. Vet wrap holding the wing in the correct anatomical position. As your duck starts to recover and move around, I suggest you get some neonatal or first size t-shirts from a thrift store and put one on over the vet wrap to try and stop the duck getting out of the vet wrap. I find it necessary to tie a knot in the neck hole, to reduce its size, as ducks are adept at pulling tee shirts down with their feet. You will need to maintain the vetwrap splinting the bone against the body for a minimum of 4 weeks.

You also seem to be successfully managing the shock. Ducks are varied in what gets them out of shock. But keeping them secluded in a quiet dark dog crate or box is important. I use pet carriers as the confined space encourages the ducks to sit and rest.

Do you have any other ducks? Your duck will need ducky company soon. If there is a calm flockmate, I would consider bringing it in to join your injurred duck once it is eating and drinking normally and standing up.

You should also give the duck daily swimming sessions, to keep it moving. I often have recovering ducks swimming in my bath. Smaller ducklings swim in a long narrow tote that fits inside my bath. But the three injured ducks last year swam in the bath as I had them living in the bath when they came out of their individual pet carriers, that I had them in until they had recovered from shock. I use textured vinyl shelf lining paper in the bottom of the bath so that they don't slip and get leg/hip problems. It can be rinsed down periodically and removed while the duck swims.

Good luck and let us know how you get on
