Help! Dog Mauled Chicken! Badly Wounded

There is a lot of controversy about using lidocaine, benzocaine, and other pain medicines in poultry. Vets do use those in surgery, so I would go ahead and use what you have today. Then get some plain Neosporin tomorow. The Microsyn AH is supposed to be very good for wound care.

So I had to run to grocery store for last minute dinner item, so while there, I bought plain neosporin and packed the wound with it.

Any suggestions on how to help her sleep tonight? I checked on her earlier while in garage, and she still wided eye awake…. I was hoping she’d be asleep after a couple hours of quiet. I think if she can get sleep the sooner she can get rest to heal and not be in so much pain (I know when I had a nasty fall and skinned my whole leg and took a chunk out of my ankle, I just wanted to nap to take pain away, and after I woke up, my leg felt so much better)… sorry just so worried about her.

So I just checked on my girl, and I’m worried she isn’t sleeping. I thought I was extra quiet opening door and sneaking out to peak under towels, but there she was staring at me with wide eyes again…. She will eventually go to sleep right????

She thankfully was no longer mouth breathing, so I think that’s an improvement…. But what else should I do to treat her, besides treating her wound? When should I try to introduce food to her? How much water should chickens drink?

How is she?! 😭
So far she doing okay. I think she could make a full recovery if we can keep infection away, which is my biggest concern, especially where the wound is deeper. She has a puncture wound at bottom of injury that still wide open where fluid likes to gather… I’m wondering if I should clean out and put a drop of superglue and push close so it’s not a pool for bacteria to grow….?

I do have some leftover doxycycline from when another chicken had a respiratory infection that I think should work to keep infection away if needed, but if not, then I may need to take her to vet, which sadly isn’t cheap here.

I trimmed back several feathers yesterday to help keep the area cleaner and actually found a broken feather stuck in wound, which was difficult to remove. When I was done, I put my tweezer and scissors down next to her, and she expressed her pain and frustration by pecking the tools, so I take that as a good sign of her energy to peck.

She has been pooping regularly nice firm poop so I think that’s good. However, it’s still very difficult for her to move with injury. I think a tendon got severed….

She is eating and drinking really good, but I have to make sure to readjust food and water in her face so she will eat/drink since she can’t move much. Sometimes she needs a little prodding to drink, but then she starting gulping on her own realizing she’s thirty.

Any other suggestions to help continue recovery? Any ideas where I can get antibiotics without taking her to a vet?

Can you get aqua mox at TSC? It worked to bring infection down on my injured cockerel. Does the wound look inflamed? Any pus? Good job on getting that feather out. Sometimes we have to hurt them to heal them. It's a tough one for sure. Where are you located?

Keep cleaning the wound and cover with antibiotic ointment, my gut instinct says it should be covered with a sterile bandage and changed twice a day, but let's see what the experts below say.

Keep the wound open to air heal. It doesn't look too bad, just jagged.

Just keep it clean, & moist to help it heal properly.
Importantly, make sure the wound has enough dry out time before each application of a moisturizer, like Triple Antibiotic ointment.

I didn’t see it on the standard TSC site, but found it on their Rx site, as well as other vet stores, like Chewy.

If I do need to give her antibiotics, what strength/how much should I give her and how often?
