Help! Dog Mauled Chicken! Badly Wounded

Sounds good! Thank you so much!!! I appreciate all yalls input and help!

Also, I noticed today she wasn’t interested in drinking water… which concerns me. Before, when I put water directly in front of her face, and sometimes prodded her beak to touch water, she would start gulping it each time. But today, she completely refused water when I checked on her, and based on water level, I don’t think she really drank much on her own… I even tried with a oral syringe, but I wasn’t very successful. However, she is still loving food. I made her warm breakfast this morning with garage cold of mini wheat cereal, oatmeal, honey, fruit, mixed with some pellets and supplements, which she scarfed, as well as gobbled up feed. When I noticed water concern, I did turn her leftover breakfast into more of a soup, which made her intake some water, but any suggestions or ideas on why she suddenly not wanting water or how to get her to drink water without having to make her special soup…?
Check to make sure her crop is emptying since she's not mobile.

Mixing the electrolytes with the food is always a good idea.

To me, the wound looks o.k. chickens bruise just like we do, so injuries can turn colors, most of the time bruising has a greenish blue look to it. This is going to take a lot of time to heal.
If there's no odor, the skin is not an angry, then you're fine.

Does it smell bad? Is there any pus?
No smell and no pus, but based on swelling and discolored, worried it’s infection inside.

I have leftover doxycycline from another chicken that had respiratory infection, so was thinking it might be better to start her on antibiotics to safer than sorry…?

What’s the best way to check her crop?

Also, when I just checked wound to smell it, I noticed for today, including this morning, she is standing when I open gate, but she could be standing to avoid me touching her… I think the cleaning spray or gel spray stings a little based on her reaction. But her standing I think is good sign that she has energy to do so, but based on muscle damage, she can’t move that leg… she tried to hobble last night when I was cleaning her bed out. She can put full weight on leg without issue (she actually was standing on bad leg with other leg up like a flamingo for minute), but the muscle to move must be damaged. She can barely move it.

Also, if I do need to give her antibiotics, which is better.. doxycycline (leftover from another chicken that had respiratory infection) or amoxicillin (Aqua-Mox).

So I definitely think it’s infected. It’s now super red and inflamed. And super painful based on her reaction. It’s also weeping way more, which could be discharge/pus.

Please let me know asap which antibiotic. If I don’t hear a response soon, I’ll start her on doxycycline.

When you say discharge from the wound, what does it look like? Is it clear and watery, or thick and white?
If it is truly pus we will get someone over here that can help you with dosage. You will probably need the hen's weight.

Her being able to stand is good. She's probably very sore, so taking steps will be hard for a while. Like any severe injury, it takes time.

To check her crop, feel it when you put her to bed at dusk, it should have food/water in it. Then feel it first thing in the morning before she's had anything to eat/drink. It should be empty. If it's not emptying let us know.

If you feel she does need antibiotics, I'd go with Amoxicillin. Dose is 57mg per pound of weight given orally twice a day for 7-10 days.

For the wound, if it's getting infected, then use Hibiclens (Chlorhexidine) to flush and clean out the wound really well. Apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment.

Ok. I’ll check her crop tomorrow (I’m in bed already).

I’m not seeing thick pus, but parts of the flap part are no longer open wound, and the swelling and discoloration suggest inside its infected, and I don’t have way to “look inside” and drain it/clean it without cutting it open and I can’t easily access the closed wound part since it’s folded over. So I think my best bet is just do antibiotics on the safe side so it kills bacteria on inside where I can’t reach, while I kill bacteria on outside with cleansor and meds.

So, I went ahead an ordered Aqua-mox (amoxicillin) this afternoon like someone suggested, which should be here Friday. In the meantime, I went ahead and gave her half a dose of doxycycline this evening, and will give her another dose tomorrow, and hopefully start her on amoxicillin Friday once it arrives.

So I felt it bedtime and again the next morning. There was less in crop, but it didn’t feel completely empty.
