My dog just tried to eat one of my chicks. He grabbed her in his mouth and punctured her under her right wing. She is now panting at the bottom of the cage and won't get up. What should I do?

I am sorry to hear.
It happened to me recently.
I took my chicken to the vet. He examined her and said she would not survive so he put her down. I was heartbroken and bought three new chicks on the way home from the vet.
That helped me a lot.
Then I got rid of the dog. That helped even more.

The same thing happened to me. We ended up taking her to the vet and she had a puncture wound that I guess did nerve damage. The left leg had no sensory ability and the vet said she would't recover from that. It was tough, but I know my dog didn't mean her any harm. He was actually bred to herd chickens, so I'm sure that was all he was trying to do. Definitely a rough day! I'm sorry to hear about your chick.

Flush any and all wounds with saline or iodine asap, I assume you've probably done this by now though. And then the chicken NEEDS to be taken to an avian vet, she'll most likely be in shock but you have internal injuries and especially bacteria from the dog's mouth to worry about now. You can begin shock treatment now though, and all that is is warm, dark, quiet. Keep her warm (especially as bird temperatures are much higher than mammals), put her in a pet carry case and cover it with a towel and make sure she's kept in a quiet room/environment until you can take her to the vet, if you haven't already. But she definitely needs to go, there is a lot of bacteria in a dogs mouth and she will need antibiotics.
