Help!! Dogs Kill Chickens, 1/2 My Flock

I can't help you on the replacement costs but to put things in perspective for the dog owner ask that bozo what his dog is worth to him and then ask a judge to have him personally destroy the dog.

In at least one state that is what a judge must demand of the owner if his dogs did the killing.

When my neighbor's dogs killed two of my chickens, I tried to talk to him rationally about it and was told that if his dogs got sick on account of eating my chickens, we'd be hearing from his attorney. We called Animal Control (because we were legally keeping our chickens, and it was his dogs that were "running at large"), and our city took him to court. He got fined for not having his dogs registered or immunised in addition to letting them run at large. We agreed not to seek compensation for the two dead hens, on condition that they kept their dogs contained. It has been 17 months and the dogs haven't left their backyard since. I kind of feel sorry for the dogs as they are living a life of imprisonment. But my birds are my top priority.

Wow.... It sounds like a lot of poultry owners have trouble with dogs. I wouldn't seek compensation for this if the dogs had only killed a few, but they killed dozens of birds

........ I don't feel like I should have to take that big of a loss....... I am also so sorry for everyone else that this has happened to because it is AWFUL.........

I would. How else will these dog owners ever learn that they can't let their animals roam at will? When "pet" dogs roam, they pack up with other dogs, behavior changes, then they become a danger to humans as well as other animals.

Dog owners who do not fence or contain their dogs on their own property do not care about that animal, period. If it disappears, that is just right and fitting. First thing we ever did upon buying each house was put up a fence. That is what responsible dog owners do. It's just part and parcel of owning a pet. You care for its safety and the safety of others who may encounter it.

A roaming dog is a predator, plain and simple-see my signature line.

If I had a sack of nickels for every time a dog owner told me "My dog never leaves the yard".....

Our local animal control loans out live animal traps for loose cats and dogs. We have cats and dogs that are constantly roaming the neighborhood. I am an animal lover but I also have a two year old and a dog I don't know running through my yard is a threat to my chickens and my child. Half our flock was killed by a loose dog too. I am planning to put out traps all around my coop and turn in any animals I catch to animal control. If you neighbors can do the courtesy of keeping their animals restrained then they can pay the $100 it costs to get the sprung from the pound.

Did you take pictures of the carnage? Its good for Animal Control to see... The opportunity to get a record of the dog lying there stuffed amid all those poor dead chickens would have been priceless -- and hard to argue with....
You should throw something in about the emotional trauma engendered on your 4 year old (check out RaeRae2's post on witnessing bloodied and dying animals as a child) when you file your complaint.
I have 3 big dogs, one of which did get loose (about a week after we moved to the country) and was returned by the Sheriff (am very grateful she was returned not shot)-- and she later killed (broke their necks, did not eat?) 3 of our chicks(our fault we left the door to the back yard open and dog walked right in)...
So I can see both sides of the coin.
Sorry the dog owner is such an IDIOT. Makes all dog owners look bad. Of course they need to reimburse you plus emotional damages.
