Any clue what’s wrong with Cupcake? She is a 3yr old female Dominique chicken. Today she was drinking water, and stood next to the water bowl with her beak open. I picked her up and white fluid started coming up her throat. I put her down and she shook her head and the white fluid dribbled down her face. Any ideas of what might be wrong?

It sounds like you pressed her crop when you picked her up which caused the water she had just been drinking to come back up. It would be a good idea to check her crop first thing in the morning before food and water to make sure it is flat and emptying normally, especially if she has been drinking a lot or acting off, but you might have just picked her up at the wrong time.

Here is an article about the crop and various issues that can occur if you need more info on that: https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ntion-and-treatments-of-crop-disorders.67194/

Thank you so much for the reply! I did some research and I was suspecting a serious case of sour crop (fluid from the beak seems to be a serious symptom) and I was going to take her to the vet. However, your theory seems plausible. If it was water, do you know why the fluid might be white? Would it have mixed with other fluid in the crop?

In the picture the "drool" looks clear to me with with some air bubbles giving it a whitish tint. If you think the fluid looked truly white and not just frothy that would be unusual and I'm not sure what would cause it.

I'm glad you have a vet nearby if you need them because fluid coming out of the mouth is in most cases a sign of a serious issue, the one exception being when you compress the crop when it's full of water. Check her crop tomorrow and keep an eye out for other symptoms like trouble breathing, water belly, or excessive drinking/diarrhea, but hopefully it was just a one time incident.
