Hi everyone. We have 6 straight run ducks that turned out to be 4 ducks and 2 drakes. Everything was great until one of our girls started laying last week. Shortly after, our drakes started fighting almost non stop. I was trying to find another home for the one because we can't afford to build a whole 2nd duck house and enclosure at this moment. After seeing what he now did to my favorite drake, the second one will probably just be culled. The one to be culled is in a separate little holding cell for the moment, so my roughed up drake is finally getting a moment to rest. Since then, I havn't seen him eat or drink yet. I also want to know what the safest/best options are to help his injuries. I mentioned taking him to an avian vet, but my husband said that he refuses to take a $4 duck to a vet.
This boy has been my favorite of our ducks since the very beginning. He is so sweet, which is probably why he lost the battle. I really want him to bounce back from this. I hope that it just looks worse than it is. I'm so worried and sad. Any good care/treatment options that don't involve a veterinarian?

I would keep him in a seperate pen and keep his wounds clean until he heals. I would also get rid of the other drake not only because they fought, it is natural for drakes to fight, but also because I think you are supposed to have one drake to five to ten hens. Hope he heals. :fl

Peroxide should only be used once in initial cleaning of wounds after that it can hurt good healthy skin so clean once then use either Neosporin with out pain relief or triple antibiotic with out pain relief. If you have Veterycin for wounds and infections that can be used safely in the eyes and face also. For the eye if you don't have Veterycin make a saline wash out of 1/8 tea of salt to 1 cup of warm water and just rinse out his eye. He should recover as long as he doesn't have any internal injuries. 1 drake and 3-5 ducks is best.

The aggressive drake who did this is being culled today and until then, he is being held away from all the others.
So it is safe for my injured drake to have the peroxide and Neosporin on him? It won't hurt him or our girls if they accidentally ingest a small amount of it?

Use a cotton ball to apply the peroxide if you want to use it. I would wash his wounds in salt water instead then apply the neo neither of them will hurt them and I don't think your females or your drake your putting it on will eat any of the neo.

Update:::The other drake has been culled, so this guy is now just sharing space with 4 girls. Since the other one has been absent, my favorite one here has started to drink, but not eat yet. I also purchased Vetericyn Bovine eye wash and Microcyn Poultry Care. has anyone used these products? If so, how effective and fast acting are they?
Thank yo dlo much

Vetericyn is awesome and safe to use around the face I am treating a Muscovy duck who scraped her lil knob on her face with it and It's easy to use so I can just spray with out having to catch her I use it when she goes to roost so she doesn't wash it off.

I haven't used the other product.

I am sure your drake will be a happy boy and start feeling better once he realizes he hasn't got someone trying to kill him.
